Canada honours September 30th as National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day.
Phyllis (Jack) Webstad’s orange shirt—a gift from her grandmother—was taken from her on her first day at St. Joseph’s Mission Residential School. This powerful moment symbolizes the systemic mistreatment of Indigenous communities and inspired the creation of Orange Shirt Day. The day raises awareness of the intergenerational impacts of residential schools and promotes the message that “Every Child Matters.” Observing this day honours both survivors and those who never returned home, while also encouraging reflection on the broader historical injustices faced by Indigenous peoples in Canada.
To acknowledge this important day, we’d like to highlight scholarly research from the University of Toronto Press (UTP) journals in Indigenous studies. This research covers a wide range of topics such as rethinking Indigenous land acknowledgements, Indigenous theatre on the world stage, Indigenous language courses, and more.
