AAVMC NAMES NEW EDITOR-IN-CHIEF FOR THE JOURNAL OF VETERINARY MEDICAL EDUCATION (JVME)
Washington, D.C., May 15, 2013––The Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) has named Dr. Daryl Buss, dean emeritus and professor emeritus of the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine (UWSVM), as the new editor-in-chief of the Journal of Veterinary Medical Education (JVME). Dr. Buss is also a past president of the AAVMC.
The JVME is the AAVMC’s peer-reviewed, internationally circulated scholarly journal, which provides a forum for the exchange of ideas, research, and discoveries concerning veterinary medical education.
“Our journal operates at the core of our mission and we are delighted that Dr. Buss has agreed to serve in this key leadership position,” said Dr. Deborah Kochevar, dean of the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University and president of the AAVMC. “His high standards of scholarship, broad familiarity with our profession and the issues it faces and extensive experience in research and academic administration all promise exceptional leadership. His appointment is truly a major step forward for the journal and for academic veterinary medicine.”
Dr. Buss pursued his research interests in coronary physiology and ventricular performance as a faculty member at the University of Florida while holding a joint appointment in the university’s college of veterinary medicine and in the college of medicine’s Division of Cardiology, gaining early experience with the “One Health” perspective that has emerged as an important part of modern veterinary medicine.
During his tenure as dean of the UWSVM, extramural research support grew from less than $8 million a year to more than $20 million annually. As a result of his leadership, the UWSVM played an instrumental role in the development of the University of Wisconsin’s Institute for Clinical and Translational Research and in the Center for Global Health, which later evolved into the UW-Madison Global Health Institute.
“The pace of innovation and change in modern veterinary medical education has never been greater and the Journal of Veterinary Medical Education is a unique resource for the sharing and dissemination of that new knowledge,” said Dr. Buss. “I am honored to have this opportunity to serve as editor-in-chief and to build on the quality and momentum that the journal has attained under the excellent leadership of the editorial board and the previous editor-in-chief, Dr. Henry Baker.”
Throughout his service as dean at the UWSVM, Dr. Buss continued to teach cardiovascular physiology. His professional excellence has been recognized through many honors and awards, including the Renk Distinguished Professor Award, the Wisconsin Veterinarian of the Year Award, the President’s Award from the Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association, and the Award for Distinguished Service to Wisconsin Agriculture from the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation.
Dr. Buss earned his Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees from the University of Minnesota, and his Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He completed specialty training in clinical cardiology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, and conducted a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Experimental Cardiology at the Max Planck Institute for Physiological and Clinical Research in Bad Nauheim, Germany.
